Federal Regulations

The Minister of Labour legislates the Canada Labour Code (includes Canada Occupational Health and Safety Regulations (SOR/86-304), more general workplace safety information ranging from lighting and sound requirements to washroom facilities)

Scaffold Industry Association of Canada

SIAC is a self-governing association that is consulted in the formulation of legislation and that determines “Best Practice”.

Canadian Standards Association

CSA is a membership-based association to develop standards (like ANSI) and test products (like UL) to enhance public safety. Both UL (ULC) and CSA are now “Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories” both in Canada & US. Their standards are often included in the Provincial and Federal legislation and may be used by manufacturers to certify product compliance.

Construction Safety Association of Ontario

CSAO is a not-for-profit entity serving the Ontario construction industry as a provider of health and safety information.

Online resources

Canadian Center for Occupational Health & Safety (CCOHS) is a federal government agency in Hamilton, Ontario that reports to the Minister of Labour that plays an educational role rather than a legislative one. Their website can be found at: www.ccohs.ca.

American National Standards Institute (ANSI) is a private organization to promote standards of quality and strengthen the U.S. position in the global marketplace. Their website can be found at: www.ansi.org.

Underwriters Laboratory of Canada (ULC): an organization that serves as a third party to test products for public safety. Their website can be found at: www.ulc.ca.
